Configure audio, external monitor and eye tracker for Assessment

Before starting an assessment, it is neccessary to review the settings for audio, external monitor and the eye tracker. If any of these icons are red in the test app, it is an indication that something needs to be adjusted. Read more here

If any of these icons are red, it is not technically possible to start an assessment. This is usually indicated by the “Select this student” -button being grayed out and not clickable.  Then look in the top right corner to see if any of the icons for audio (microphone), external screen or eye tracker are red. If so, adjustments need to be made.

This article contains these sections:
  • Audio/Microphone
  • External Monitor
  • Eyetracker

🎙️Audio/Microphone

We recommend using your laptop/Pc's own sound recording. Make sure that the microphone is set to 100%, see example image below:

🖥️External Monitor

The external monitor runs on its own power supply and needs to be plugged into a wall socket. This is so that it does not take power from the laptop (the eye tracker gets power from the laptop).

Step 1. Check that the monitor is turned on.

Step 2. Click on the external monitor/display icon in the test application and check that the selection is as below:

  • Show control on: Your laptop or PC should be displayed here and should always be mentioned as DISPLAY1 and/or (Primary)
  • Show stimuli on: Here the external monitor need to be selected and is usually stated with the name of the monitor.

If the same unit is selected on both "Show control on" and "Show stimuli on"  you cannot proceed with assessment.

Unresponsive student display

If the student's monitor is unresponsive check the following:

  1. That the power cord to the monitor is plugged into an electrical outlet. If the monitor/screen has been used without a power cable for a long time, it may need to be “recharged” for a while prior to run the test application.
  2. The connection cable between the display and the laptop/PC is secure and attached correctly.
  3. If the display has an on/off button it should be turned on.
  4. Make sure the test application has "found" the external monitor. If you cannot find the external monitor, make sure you have extended the displays/screens: How do I extend displays?

Step 3. Calibrate the student's monitor: Calibrate the student monitor

👁️Eyetracker

If the eye tracker icon is red, you are likely to get the message shown in the example image when you click on the eye tracker icon. This is an indication that something with the power supply to the eye tracker needs to be addressed.

Step 1. Make sure that both the laptop and the external monitor each have their power cable plugged in.

Step 2. Try connecting the eye tracker to another USB port on the laptop if there are several. Sometimes you may have used one USB input more than the other(s) and it may become worn and not generate enough power from the laptop to the eye tracker.

  • If you have USB hubs available at the school, a recommendation is to connect the eye tracker to one and then connect the USB hub to the laptop.

Step 3. Do you have the right software installed?

Lexplore provides Tobii 4C and Tobii 5L, and they have different software. The software for Tobii 5L is available for download on the Lexplore portal, and the software for Tobii 4C is requested from Lexplore Support (see contact below). Here is the full guide for Tobii and software: Tobii Eyetracker Download and Install
