Once the student and the hardware are positioned correctly, the five steps of the assessment are: 1. RAN – Rapid Automatised Naming of letters (only for the early grades) 2. The student reads the first passage of text aloud. 3. The student then answers questions about the text they have just read. 4. The second passage of text is read silently by the student. Year 2 students always read both texts out loud. This passage of text may also be read aloud by students in high year groups if that need exists. 5.
