Practicing Decoding and Reading Fluency
Here, you can participate in exercises that stimulate decoding and reading fluency.
You will read about how to prepare best!
On the Reading Instruction page in the portal, you can find more detailed instructions for each exercise!
You can read about:
- Instructions for fluency training in fluency books - larger group (pair reading), smaller group, individual.
- Fluency training in books

Fluency training - Larger group (pair reading)
Planning an intensive period in class
- Plan which weeks it will be carried out.
- It is important to do this for a limited period of 3 weeks to maintain the students'
motivation. - When students read in pairs, 10-15 minutes is appropriate.
- Plan the time of day that suits you, for example, in the morning, and replace it
with another task.
- Use the insights you gained after the screening and pair students by reading level.
- All pupils can participate in intensive reading in groups, but the teacher should
be attentive so that the pupil is not left to an unsafe situation in the
classroom.
- It may be appropriate to use any half-class hours for intensive training so that you,
as a teacher, have a greater opportunity to give feedback to the students.
- Remember to adapt the exercise to your class or group!
You can read more detailed instructions on the page about Reading instruction under the category Reading fluency training!
Here you can see examples of reading level average, above average and high.

Fluency training - Smaller group
Planning an intensive period for a small group
- Small-group practice is especially suitable for low- and below-average students.
- Schedule a limited period of 2-3 weeks.
- 10-15 minutes of pair reading.
- You can gather between 8-10 students in a group.
- Prepare by dividing students into pairs, using the insights gained after the screening.
- You may need to switch pairs between sessions as students may develop differently.
- Remember to adapt the exercise to your group!
You can read more detailed instructions on the page about Reading
instruction under the category Reading fluency training!
Here you can see an example of an exercise for reading level below average!

Fluency Training – Individual Reading
Planning for an individual intensive period
- Particularly suitable for students at reading level low.
- Schedule a limited period of 2-3 weeks.
- Approximately 8 minutes for individual reading.
- How long should the student practice each element?
- When the student sounds out the nonsense words/words without stumbling or changing sounds, or skipping sounds or syllables, it is time to move on in the book.
- The student can sometimes do it after the student has read the page/section once.
However, it may also take several sessions before the student reads fluently. - If it goes easy for the student, let the student continue reading until you notice
that it is becoming more difficult for the student and he or she needs more
support.
- Remember to adapt the exercise to your student.
- The exercise can be carried out in a book adapted to the student if you think it
motivates the student more.
- You can read more detailed instructions on the page about Reading instruction under the category Reading fluency training!
Here, you can see an example of an exercise for reading level low.

Fluency training in fiction books
- This exercise is especially suitable for older students or strong readers.
- The exercise shall be conducted for a limited period.
- Students read aloud to each other.
- The reading should be for a limited period of 2-3 weeks. Each day, students
read for about 20 minutes. - Some exercises provide the opportunity to carry out extra tasks that are linked to the students' reading.
Choose exercises that are suitable for your students.
- Pair reading
- Writing assignment
- Image assignment
- Project closure
Suggestions for Introduction to Pair Reading
You choose books in advance and create reading pairs using the insights you gain from the screening.
Of course, adapt the instruction to your students (for example, age).
- Now you will get to read books in pairs.
- I (the teacher) have chosen books that I want you to read.
- You and your friend should read every other page aloud to each other.
- Help each other if you get stuck on difficult words.
- We will have couples reading in the books every morning (choose another time if it
suits you better) for about 20 minutes. This means that each student in the
class will read for about 10 minutes every day!
You can read more detailed instructions on the page about Reading
instruction under the category Pair reading in books.

Well done ⭐
Now you’ve completed the course and received some new ideas for teaching fluency.
We recommend that you visit the reading instruction page together with a colleague and discuss how you want to approach the material together.
Of course, we hope you have gained some inspiration for your work in the classroom. In the next part of this training, we will focus on Managing reading in the Insight Portal - You will learn how to navigate the students' reading, reading fluency and e-library sections of the portal.
